Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ

  1. What size Ceiling Dome Skylight should I have?

The Ceiling Dome size is best determined by the proportional size of the room, foyer, hallway, stairwell, etc.  There are ample sizes to select from in most of Ceiling Domes Australia’s dome shapes.
The size can depend on structural obstacles in or on the roof, air conditioning units and economy restraints.

  2. What shapes are available and the suitability of particular shaped Ceiling Domes Skylights?

The shape of the Ceiling Dome Skylight comes down to clients choice.  One needs to consider the architectural period of the building or room and existing furnishings.  Some skylight dome shapes lend themselves to an off centre positioning.  The simpler the skylight shape, the more light economy one can achieve.

  3. What are your Ceiling Domes Skylights made from and why?

Mainly Western Red Cedar and a small range of aluminium sand cast Ceiling Dome frames.  Cedar Timber is used principally because it is so stable.  Also it is used for its beauty, light weight and is now grown in plantations.  Glass panels are used to fill the skylight dome frame.

  4. What sort of glass is used for the Ceiling Dome Skylight?

Patterned glass, stain glass, sand blast glass panels, also traditional lead light panels and reproduction stain glass panels, can now be supplied.

  5. Final cost of a Ceiling Dome, roof skylight and installation?

Our Ceiling Domes start from $640 to $5,200 for our quality standard range.

    • Average cost of, say a 1300 x 1300 dome is $1,800
    • A good brand roof skylight, say 800 x 800 is $400
    • Average cost of installation with no complications is $650
    • Remember delivery may be extra depending on the ceiling dome and your location
    • Total installed package for this example is $2,580

  6. Skylights:

All good brand skylights are waterproof when installed correctly.  Heat, UV rays, noise and hail can all be addressed by the type of roof skylight one uses.

  7. How long to supply and fit a Ceiling Dome and roof skylight?

The turn around time from placing an order to completing the Ceiling Dome and installing the dome and skylight can be from 4 to 10 weeks on Ceiling Domes Australia’s quality standard range.

  8. Custom Ceiling Dome Skylight size and/or shape

We are happy to design and build an original one-off new ceiling dome skylight which may be the first of its kind in the world. It is always exciting to see a new Ceiling Dome rise up from the table. Custom domes may entail a lot of preliminary set out and design work prior to construction, which will add to the cost.

  9. Finishes and colour availability?

Satin or gloss clear lacquers over natural selected cedar, stained and lacquered or painted or a combination of clear laquer and painted or two-toned painted colour, in your choice of colours. A high standard is achieved on all finishes.

  10. Installation – How long does it take?

The installation of the Ceiling Dome, light shaft and roof skylight is usually completed within one day.  For large domes or where the roof needs some extra reconstruction, or air conditioning units need moving, it may take longer than one day.  Although the roof skylight can be installed well within a day, the roof is always sealed in just a day.
